Serviceberry

Serviceberry
(Amelanchier alnifolia)

Grows as a shrub or small tree in the canyons of our foothills. The leaf edges are smooth near the stems, but become toothed toward the tips.

The fruits look like tiny purple apples. They are an important food source for wildlife, and were also used as food by native Americans and by the men of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
