Genus Hymenoxys Composite Family (Asteraceae/Compositae)
Actinea or Stemless Woollybase
(Hymenoxys acaulis)
This is a yellow composite that blooms in the early summer.
It is a small plant, but has quite showy flower heads.
The ray flowers have notched tips -- usually 3 notches.
The species name acaulis means "without a stem", and
refers to the fact that all of the leaves grow directly from the
base of the plant. The tall flower stalk is technically not
a stem.
