John Lant and His Family
1832-1906

Thomas and Ann (Pearce) Lant were living in or near Romsey in Hampshire. Birth of John Lant was about 1832. The previous 4 children and subsequent 2 children were born in Romsey or Michelmersh. The 1881 and 1891 census state that John was born in Gosport, Hampshire. It is a small village East of Romsey just north of the railroad line. The fact that Thomas was working for the railroad could account for a different birthplace.

In 1840 the family moved to Alverthorpe, Wakefield, Yorkshire. His mother died August 20, 1840 in Alverthorpe. The family was still in Alverthorpe for the 1841 British census. John is listed as 9 years old living with his widowed father.

An interesting note is that the George Woodhead family lived within a few blocks of the Lant family. John Lant would later marry Ann Woodhead in 1853. Perhaps they became acquainted during their years in Wakefield.

1851 census:

The search for John in Liverpool Street in London was not fruitful.

The Woodheads lived in Wakefield, Yorkshire. Ann is 18 at home of her widowed mother.

John's father, Thomas Lant died 1 Aug 1853 Romsey in Union workhouse. His occupation was listed as excavator age 75 years. Cause of death general decay. Death was noted by Sarah Southwell in attendance at Poorhouse Romsey Extra. Romsey, Southampton

John Lant, bachelor, occupation was baker, son of Thomas Lant excavator and Ann Woodhead spinster daughter of George Woodhead deceased were married 23 Oct 1853 in the parish of Liverpool Street St Pancras (London), Middlesex, England. Witnesses were not close relatives. The birth record for John Lant’s wife, Ann Woodhead was 20 August 1832 in the Thornes church at Wakefield, near Alverthorpe in Yorkshire. She was the daughter of George and Harriet Woodhead. George was a mason. Their family has been located in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. Her mother was listed as a widow and was living with her eldest son in Wakefield in 1861. She is not listed in the 1881 census. John and Ann Lant had ten children. Their children: 

     Marion Lant born 21 May 1855 Wakefield, Yorkshire.
        She married John Gourley 18 Jan 1875 in Sheffield, 
	Yorkshire.
     George Thomas Frederick Lant born 9 Nov 1857 Leeds, 
        Yorkshire.
        He died 25 Oct 1864 Batley, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.
     John Edwin Lant born 21 Jun 1861 Hunslet, Yorkshire.
        He married Mary Vickerman 10 Oct 1880 in Batley, 
	Dewsbury, Yorkshire.
     Herbert Lant born 10 Apr 1862 Wakefield, Yorkshire.
        He married Elizabeth Harris 23 Feb 1885 in Bristol.
        He died 28 Sep 1933 in Hessle, Sculcoates Kingston.
     Arthur Lant born 22 Sept 1864 Batley, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.
        He  died 25 Jan 1874 Wath, Rotherham, Yorkshire.
     William Ernst Lant born 14 Jan 1867 Wath, Rotherham, 
        Yorkshire.  He died 1 Jan 1922 in Rotherham, Yorkshire. 
     Anne Elizabeth Lant born 20 Apr 1870 Wath, Rotherham, 
        Yorkshire.  She married Frank Louis Shaw 12 Sep 1894 
	in Wath, Rotherham, Yorkshire.
     Harriet Kate Lant born 20 Apr 1870 Wath, Rotherham, 
        Yorkshire.
        She died 22 Aug 1890 Wath Rotherham.
     Harry Lant born 20 Aug 1872 Darfield, Barnsley, Yorkshire.
     Edith Alice Lant born 28 May 1875 Wath, Rotherham, 
        Yorkshire.  She married Oscar James Shaw 18 Jan 1896 in 
	Rotherham, Yorkshire.

 

1861 census:

John and Ann Lant with 3 children lived in Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire.

1871 census:

John and Ann Lant were living with their seven children in West Melton, Brampton Bierlow near Wath upon Dearne in York, England.

1881 Census:

John and Ann Lant with 7 children and 1 grandchild lived at 15 Claremont Street, St Philips and Jacobs, Bristol.

1891 Census:

John and Ann Lant with 4 children and 2 grandchildren were living at 31 Cadman Street,.Wath upon Dearne, Yorkshire.

1901 Census:

In the 1901 Census John and Ann Lant were living at 36 High Street, Wath upon Dearne, York, England, with their daughter Annie Shaw and her family.

Ann Lant wife of John Lant died 26 Oct 1902 age 70 at Sunnyside Wath upon Dearne, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Cause of death recorded as softening of brain 3 years. The death was registered by H. J. Lant, grandson.

John Lant died 9 June 1906 Chapel Street Wath upon Dearne, Rotherham, Yorkshire. age 74 oilworker manager. The cause of death was recorded as senile, gangrene. Death was registered by H. Lant, son.
