Note: accuracy of names, ages, and all other information from census records
varies, depending upon at least four factors:
(1) Accuracy of information given to the census taker.
For example, an individual may have been unsure of a parent's birthplace,
so just made a guess.
Often the information was not collected from each individual directly.
The census taker may have spoken to a family member who wasn't sure about
the answers, or even to a neighbor, landlord, employer, roommate, etc.
(2) Skill of the census taker in spelling, recording information accurately, etc.
Many census takers were not very good at spelling. They also sometimes made
errors in writing down what the person told them.
(3) Whether the census taker's handwriting is clear and legible or not.
Many had bad handwriting, and even when originally legible, some census
pages have faded or been damaged & thus have become hard to read.
Sometimes the original page was legible, but when filmed it was out of focus
or had other flaws.
(4) Accuracy of those who transcribe the records.
Some are better at deciphering old handwriting than others, and some are
more careful than others about entering every letter and number correctly.
